Mercifully this fad or massive cubes or balls of ice came and went quickly. Perhaps it has some rational basis for “shot” drinkers, but as someone who drinks cocktails it never made any sense.
I don’t think that is a trend who has gone - there is hardly any serious cocktail bar for example in SF who doesn’t have cocktails with one large cube on the menu
I can’t remember the last time I “did shots” — must be more than well over 3 decades, and that trend hasn’t gone anywhere AFAIK, at least at the cocktail bars I frequent.
Personally, I love the spheres as well as the big blocks, with a slight preference for the globes.
I would think it makes excellent sense for classic whiskey cocktails like a Manhattan or old fashioned. Sure, in a professional setting, maybe they call for being stirred and then then decanted into a chilled glass, but at home, mixing them in the glass with a big cube cools the drink and provides a dilution rate you can somewhat control by swirling your glass more or less aggressively. That’s how my partner generally prefers them.
Jimmy Durante?
German comic
Oh OK,Jimmy Durante was an American Vaudville comedian, used to be called the “schnozz” because of his huge nose! haha!
“Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!”
I think I was introduced to him via Looney Toons, but it might have be It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, World, one if my dad’s favorite movies.
I love mad world. It’s in my holiday wrapping gifts rotation classic movies
If I’m not done wrapping by the end I’m in trouble
Or rather intoxicated cause wrapping gifts goes better with a beverage
One of the best versions I’ve seen was at Sardine in Madison, WI. Large cube placed in the glass then a small “ice cube stamp” was used to melt the restaurant logo into the top face of the cube.
