Ice cream flavors worth seeking out: on beyond chocolate! [Boston]

Set your Wayback Machine to the beloved late Bailey’s ice cream where mocha lace was a signature flavor. As far as I know, Lizzy’s is the only place to continue the legacy.

I used to enjoy that flavor at Lizzy’s Waltham location but haven’t been there in many years. Though it wasn’t exactly like Bailey’s of memory, Lizzy’s mocha lace as close as I’ll probably ever get.

I’ve made the Jeni’s goat/cherry, too, and it is delicious. I don’t have an ice cream maker, so the texture was hardly the best, but the flavor was wonderful.

Whole Foods has a few Jeni’s flavors, so does Pemberton Farm in Cambridge and Ball Square liquors in Somerville, and Semolina Kitchen in Medford near Tufts. I saw some at Savenor’s in Cambridge a few years ago.

If you ever find yourself out in the Lenox, MA area, I highly recommend a stop at High Lawn Farms in Lee, MA. Their ice cream is tremendous.

Luckily, Formaggio Kitchens on Huron Ave in Cambridge sells a few of their flavors. I am a fan of the mint chocolate chip.

The High Lawn cream (sold at Whole Foods) is so good. I’ll look out for the ice cream at Formaggio. My son’s favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip and I’m sure he’d love to try it. Thanks!

Oh, I’ve found Jeni’s in plenty of stores here (WF and Wegmans, among others) - just not the same as a scoop shop.

I’m jealous you got it direct and fresh from scoop shop!

Hi-Rise also carries High Lawn.

Having said that, I confess I’m not an overwhelming fan. (Nor am I of Lizzy’s, New City, Gracies, or Honeycomb – except for a flavor or two). My local loyalties are to Forge and Batch. And Christina’s for interesting flavors.

Joe, the owner is a very generous human being, hard worker and bye the bye the brother of the owner of Toscanini’s, Gus Rancatore. IQ-wise I have no idea !

Does Gerley’s (nee Tipping Cow) offer Frozen Yogurt now ? Tipping Cow did not. One of us only eats frozen yogurt. Which brings to mind Benson’s in Boxford https://bensonsicecream.com Route 133 in West Boxford Village ,181 Washington Street. It’s a good thing for our waistlines we don’t live nearby. Fresh fruit ice cream is their thing think : Fresh Native Red Raspberry in July & August, Fresh Native Blackberry & Fresh Native Black Raspberry in July, Fresh Native Peach & Fresh Maine Blueberry in August, Fresh Native Sweet Corn in August, and Fresh Native Baked Apple and Fresh Native Spiced Pumpkin in September. Our faves are now through August. All small batch handmade.

The Ginger ice cream at Erikson’s in Maynard, MA on route 117. Serving ice cream since 1937. You order at the window. The small serving is big! Most people take their ice cream back to their car but there are a few outdoor tables.

Picco usually has one or two interesting flavors. I tried a green grape sorbet a couple of weeks back. They’re listing that, along with miso blueberry and blood orange with dark chocolate chips at the moment. A few years ago, they had a white nectarine sorbet that was delicious. If they brought it back, I’d be buying as many pints as I could.

My favorite ice cream of all time is Toscanini’s lemon espresso, with two apparently defunct Jeni’s flavors—we served them at our wedding instead of cake—tied for a close second: juniper lemon curd (which they somewhat ridiculously claimed was inspired by the martini, despite being the flavor profile of a Tom Collins) and sweet corn with black raspberry. Another Toscanini’s favorite that I’ve only had once was Wort, as in the leftovers from brewing beer. Man, was that good.

I’ve been disappointed by more mail order superpremium ice creams than I’d like to think about; Jeni’s has overall been the best (though they are much less daring and much less interesting than they used to be, and JBB’s attention seems to have shifted elsewhere), and Capogiro was awesome when they were around.

In my southern NH neck of the woods there are not a whole lot of places with flavors that are both unusual and mindblowing (I tend to rotate between New England standards like Grape Nut, orange pineapple, and cherry vanilla), but! If anyone is in Milford, NH for some reason, the ice cream stand at Trombly Gardens has an anadama ice cream. This is their claim, anyway; it absolutely does not taste like anadama bread, but instead, like Indian pudding. Molasses and a little bit of baking spice. Great in the fall, but I get it pretty often in the summer too. It must be popular to be in their standard flavors list instead of relegated to seasonality.

New City Microcreamery has an excellent sweet corn vanilla blackberry ice cream…

I had New City Microcreamery’s Dubai chocolate a few days ago, which is a pistachio base with a chocolate swirl and chunks of Dubai chocolate. It’s heavily cardamom flavored, with additional warm spice notes, and I thought it was fabulous.

Toscanini’s is an interesting shop - on one side you have very good and interesting flavors which rival any place I have seen here in the states or Europe but at the same time I was always astonished how little efforts Toscanini’s cared about the quality, mouthfeel and consistency of their ice cream. The ice cream often was either too watery or sometimes with large crystal formation and they obviously also had problems with the right storage temperature of their products. If they would delivery quality ice cream like other shops in Boston (we always missed Morano Gelato as the best ice cream/gelato place anywhere in New England) and maintain their creativity they would be an exceptional place.

Interested in SNH good ice cream of any description, particularly within easy shot of Rt 3 or 93. The grapenut at Richardson’s Farm in Boscawen (which I guess is more central NH) is pretty great.

Ooh, thanks for letting me know! Our Whole Foods carries New City, I’ll see if they have that one.
