The nice thing about the Old Oakland FM is that if you can’t find what you want, you can walk across the street to Chinatown, where the prices are low and the produce is almost as fresh.
Went to the Alemany FM in SF this gorgeous sunny morning. We’ve just returned home after 3 weeks in Taiwan and Japan, where we hit up alot of produce venues. Browsing foreign markets are always a treat, but It is even nicer to be able to stock up on fresh items, beyond the limitations of a hotel mini-fridge (and myriad competing food options).
Alemany is our favorite FM. The variety and freshness never fails to impress and amaze, and the prices are wonderful. We couldn’t control ourselves and way overbought.
Beautiful Ong Choy, 2 bundles for $5.
Many many varieties of veggies that are rarely available out of season.
Heirloon Tomatoes, $2/lb. Not American supermarket pretty, but will surely be pure goodness.
So happy to find these Japanese cucumbers, like the wonderful ones we had two weeks ago in Okayama. Fantastic after a hot sweaty hike.
While the Wife is putting away our bouty, I nuked a cob for 1 minute and inhaled. Fresh Sweet Corn, one of the finest things I’ve eaten in recent memory.
Back to original question. Have you tried the Market at Edgewood, an indie market, off Embarcadero and 101 in Palo Alto. I‘ve been a few times and thought the produce looked good, not pricey and there seemed to be a good selection. Modern and clean, not chichi. There’s Chef Zhao in the same small shopping center. Had XLBs there a while back.
Thanks. I will check it out. I was there a long time ago, but don’t really remember much about it any more.
Nice haul! I was there yesterday as well - grabbed some of those heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries and bok choy.
