We were in Kuala Lumpur to attend the MICHELIN Guide to Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2025 awards ceremony, and came back to Elegant Inn for dinner last Friday evening. As always, one always comes here with bated breath, wondering what new surprises await us this time. We weren’t disappointed. ![]()
- Appetiser platter which consists of:
Crunchy prawn-and-meat fortune pouch
Homemade organic tofu with HK dried prawn & tung choi
Elegant Inn crispy rice roll
- Braised fish-maw with Japanese dried scallops in seafood broth - this was served in a goon dong gao (Chinese: 灌湯餃) fashion, i.e. intensely-flavored seafood meat-and-broth sealed in a large dumpling, then immersed in a bowl of light seafood broth. One gets to taste two types of soups in one dish!
- Two types of braised abalone - this dish consisted of two species of abalone, one South African, and one Japanese - braised for hours in a deeply-flavored stock, then served with broccoli. The dish was finished off table-side. The lighter-colored South African abalone had a springier texture, compared to the more densely-textured Japanese one.

Chinese spinach (“poh choi”) topped with braised hairy crab roe - my favorite dish for the evening, with the eggy crab roe providing a savory richness to the slightly bitterish vegetables.

Deep-fried stuffed chicken wings - these were fat wands of de-boned chicken wings, stuffed with seasoned, chopped chicken meat. Quite a substantial dish, and a bit too rich for me.

Crystal sea-prawns in chef’s sauce, with organic mushrooms and pear - absolutely scrumptious: the chef’s sauce had the merest hint of chili spice which cuts into the savory prawns and sweet-fleshed pear. The spongy-soft mushrooms provided a delightful textural contrast.

Fried noodles with chicken, shredded omelette and lettuce

Lap mei fun - baked rice topped with preserved meats and Chinese sausages in a claypot.
We barely had room for dessert, but could not resist their trio of best-known offerings:
