[Penang] Chaats at Adyar Ananda Bhavan, King Street

We’re back to Adyar Ananda Bhavan for Sunday breakfast this morning.

Some of our choices:

  1. Ghee Dosa - the classic South Indian crisp crepe made from fermented rice-lentil batter, cooked with clarified butter. It’s served with some really tasty dips: white coconut chutney, spicy-red kara-chutney, green mint-coriander chutney, sambhar and a very aromatic, tasty dhal curry.

  2. Pongal - spiced rice and lentils. The version here lagged far behind our fave version from Woodlands restaurant nearby.

  3. Idly - very good version, as good as any here at the Little India neighborhood.

  4. Masala Dosa - tasty, albeit rather clumsily folded, compared to the perfectly turned out versions we usually get from top South Indian breakfast places here like Woodlands, Chettiar and Pure Saiva.

  5. Kesari - much, much too sweet - the worst we’d had, in fact. It lacked the fragrance and flavors we get from (much) better versions elsewhere here. Avoid!

  6. Hot beverages, which include tea with milk, masala tea, and Milo

As always, service was friendly and nonpareil. Just wished the food was better.
