Anyone have ideas for high school baking club projects?

What types of pans (and in what quantities) do you have access to? Are they a limiting factor in what will work for your class in large volumes?

It is an after school club that I got roped into doing. I wish it was a class. There are pots and pans but not much baking stuff. I can bring in 2 KitchenAids but even that isn’t enough for all of the members.

Ah - got it. So, multiple loaves of quick bread (no mixer required) are out of the question? As are muffins in quantity? I’m just thinking of the type of recipes which might give the kids life-skills (as well as do well at bake sales). Quick breads, muffins, and cupcakes would have been at the top of my list.

Maybe giant sheet-pan cakes?

How many ovens?

One. The club has mostly been decorating cupcake contests. The members are excited to actually make stuff but its just not possible with so many students. We did 30 caramel apples a few weeks ago with 4 pots of caramel and it was standing room only.

We can buy disposable foil loaf pans for quick breads. It is just a matter of all of the students and other supplies needed. Glad that the next meeting will be just decorating cupcakes!

Banana muffins or pumpkin muffins?

Can we get three cheers for what you’re doing here? These many years later, I still treasure the memories of the activities organized by dedicated teachers at my high school. It sounds to me like the opportunity you are creating for those kids is making a difference. Friendships, new skills, confidence—these are some of the things I can imagine they’re getting.

Is it possible to divide the group into two parts. The first group will cook muffins or cupcakes. The second group will do clean up. Both groups eat the results. The next week, the groups switch up. OR, brainstorm with the kids to come up with a good solution.

Here is my favorite cupcake recipe … the batter is pure heaven:

The Magnolia Bakery Handbook of Icebox Desserts is $2.99 on Kindle now–note that it is icebox desserts, not general baking recipes. I do see lots of cheesecakes!

Tomorrow we are doing Dio de Los Muertos cupcakes. Decorating. It isn’t my forte but I’m just winging this as I go. I ordered some fancy cupcake wrappers and toppers, sprinkles, sugar sparkles, and food coloring for the icing.

Just curious: Does you situation allow for off-campus activities with the club members? Maybe a trip to a bakery or commercial kitchen would be of interest (and ideally within the budget constraints, including the cost of a sample or two).

It is an after school club and not a class. I wish it was.

Those googly eye toppers are pretty cool for DOTD decor.:eyes:
