Appliance Hell

Front or top load? Did you do a forced drain or will it accept a forced drain? On our machine, front loader, it is 'power on + spin speed + start. That is a 14 minute run. Yes, it is a pain when they go down!

Do you see a difference in how clean clothes come out between front and top load washers? I have a GE front loader. The darn thing always smells a bit moldy, though I wipe it down after every wash, and I think the color of the clothed gets dull.

When our LG front loader left us, that gasket around the front was indeed moldy, but other parts hidden within had become moldy as well. Good riddance. The GE top loader we have now does not have those issues, and it does an excellent job. We also changed our detergent to Blueland tablets. Most detergents are not only packaged in plastic, they have plastic in them, presumably as surfactants. Blueland, package and product, is plastic free and does an outstanding job. I like their dishwasher tablets, too, and find they do a better job than Cascade pods. If you try them, Amazon carries them and, not surprisingly, is waaaaaay faster. I read that putting on and taking off clothing with plastics in them is the chief way we ingest microplastics. Washing them with plastics and eating off of plates washed in plastics surely doesn’t help. Ok, now back to appliance hell! Note that the ancient (1950s) appliances and faucet photographed above by @shrinkrap are chiefly good old metal.

Not draining sounds like a clogged filter. YouTube has a ton of tutorials on DIY repairs if you’re so inclined. Usually just involves pulling the washer out to access the back panel – sometimes even less.

I can’t wait till it breaks down so I can get a top loader. We have the pedestals too so,I’ll need to get rid of the one under the washer. It’s only 2 years old.

Good to know about the Blueland tablets. We use the toilet bowl ones and have been very happy with them.

Yeah, they are cool.

It doesn’t not drain. The problem is it doesn’t spin. Like, the drum won’t go round-and-round.

Whoops. Well, YouTube and chatGPT can be big helpers if you wanna DIY repair.

NEW WASHING machine arrived this morning after repairman deemed the old one unfixable (only ten years old. Thanks, planned obsolescence.)

I remarked something in passing to him about wishing for a top-loader, and he volunteered that his own adult son had just bought a top-loader in the brand that the family held in highest esteem (LG), and had even gotten quite a nice deal at Lowe’s.

After a quick consult with Mom and two phone calls to local independent appliance dealers (one of which has been in business since 1927 and is staffed entirely with extremely elderly people operating out of what can only be described as a 20th-century appliance museum) to see if either carried that brand (they don’t), I bought the exact top-loader the repairman mentioned to me, and it was swiftly installed today.

Let’s see how long this puppy lasts.

Last year, I bought a new washer and dryer to replace the antiques. The new ones were GE, but I don’t remember the model numbers. Both were defectively designed, so after only 6 months, I replaced them with Speed Queen top loaders.

Defectively designed: the GE dryer never collected any lint in the lint screen. It was magic! I called the dryer vent cleaner guy who was intrigued. It turned out the dryer drum had to be removed in order to remove all the lint. This degree of servicing is beyond my geriatric hands, so the dryer had to go. The GE washer: it was a top loader, so nice. But it warbled different Chinese melodies to inform me of the different washing functions it was doing: loading clothes, locking the lid, pausing, loading water, pausing, agitating, pausing, spinning, pausing, rinsing… It was the first time in my life I wanted to attack an appliance. The tunes were loud and we were unable to turn them down or off as they were integrated into the safety system. Nowhere in the sales brochure or online was this plot against my sanity mentioned.

OK, these are both DUMB and DUMBER!

And this made me laugh! Seriously - I’d be ticked off at both of these issues.

I like the way it washes and doesn’t tear up my clothes, but I run the longest cycle possible and do an extra rinse. All with cold water. I also got a little device that holds the door wide open, so everything inside dries out. No more stink.

Why wait? If you wait until it dies, odds are it ends up in a landfill. If you give it away still working, odds are better that someone will get some use out of it.

I bought an 18" carousel for my liquor bottles so i can store them in a cupboard and just rotate the carousel to get the bottle i want.
My collection is a bit more limited than yours, though, maybe just 10 or 11 bottles in all.
And i keep my vermouths, bitters and my Luxardo Maraschino in the fridge plus vodka in the freezer.
I really like these carousels for my kitchen stuff, too.

I have carousels in my fridge and in my kitchen cabinets.

I am waiting for someone to design a square carousel to use up that pesky corner space! LOL!
And, yes, I am joking about that.

Though i have thought about cupboard carousels set up like a sushi restaurant conveyor belt.
They would be very cool!
If they actually worked, that is.

I currently use that space for the the bottles i probably will not be tasting this year.

We take out the drawer entirely and let it drain and air dry and dry out the inside of the drawer compartment. And dry out the inside of the machine, especially the rubber seal where water collects, and leave it open to dry overnight. We do this every time and it’s worth it…clothes get really clean, the high speed spin gets so much water out, and the machine never smells funky. We also use Affresh washing machine sanitation cycle when prompted. No problems at all.
