No need to apologize. After all, it was you who inspired me to create a pizza topping thread ![]()
Saul Goodman!
Interestingly, canned mushrooms are the mushrooms that are used on the regional pizzas of Windsor, Ontario. the other distinct feature is that the pepperoni is shredded.
The old school pizzeria called Tony’s Pizza in London, Ontario used canned mushrooms in the 70s and 80s. I don’t know if they do now.
Canadian Little Caesars typically used fresh sliced mushrooms, in my experience..We ate at lot of Little Caesar’s in the 90s. i haven’t eaten any in 20 years.
I grew up in Michigan (the birthplace of Little Caesars) and canned mushrooms were pretty common in pizza shops everywhere. Not sure if it was a copycat situation or just a regional norm. I definitely prefer sautéed fresh mushrooms on a pizza now, but I can still get down with canned, even if only for the nostalgia factor!
I feel the way about canned mushrooms the way you feel about corn on pizza.
No way, no how — I don’t even like them in other dishes, nostalgia be damned (my mom used them in spaghetti sauce).
A restaurant that uses canned shrooms on pizza won’t ever see me darken their door again.
If I’m making my own, this is the best option. (With some garlic too!) Slightly better pizza shops around here (Boston area) just throw them on fresh. That’s fine too IMO. The lower end and Greek places almost always use canned, and that’s a hard pass for me. I personally just can’t stand the texture and kind of vinegary flavor.
I’m meat fussy. I despise most Italian sausages; but have a few places where that sausage kicks arse. I can’t do the rabbit crap of papa Johns, or many other chains. I found a source for good Italian, hot and sweet , I get imported from my hometown. Why I’ve been making my own pizzas of late.
If all that’s available is rabbit turds, I have no problem going with the pure veg. Canned mushrooms don’t cut it for me either. Rubber. Love garlic with almost everything, though.
Texture, weird acidic taste, and I have heard of there being a high level of yucky things like maggots in them.
