Food Aversions ...

I used to really hate cilantro but I discovered that what I can’t stand is to bite down on it alone. As long as it’s well mixed in with other stuff, I actually like it. At the burrito place, I request cilantro y cebolla a dentro, cilantro and onions added inside.

I had the soap flavor my first 10 or so time, Over time, I’ve grown to need it. But, when company’s coming, and I know a “soaper” is coming over, I’ll either make two batches, 1 cilantro, 1 celery leaves, or just make a big one with only celery leaves. Then, after all the effort, the cilantro hater will say they can’t take raw garlic (Zakarian!)

I was surprised I didn’t like mussels … I really love shellfish.

All the curly parsley I’ve seen always seems SUPER tough and fiber out. Like, I would not want bits of it in my oleo e aglio o pasta. I assumed it was only for those little useless baby tree sprigs you got on restaurant plates in the 70’s and 80’s

I don’t go out of my way for mussels.

I go out of my way for scallops and crustaceans.

I had rarely enjoyed mussels. It seemed like a way to eat diluted garlic butter. Plus, they were too often cooked until tough. Cafe Malta in Austin changed that. Theirs has harissa, and the mussels are soft. I love it.

And you have a problem with that?

It seemed silly to pay for the mussels. Garlic butter and a baguette would be plenty.

I do love fresh and well prepared mussels. If not well prepared, taste like low tide.

I too got over the cilantro thing. Still dont ear a lot of it but appreciate its presence in a flavor profile.

MIRACLE WHIP TRIGGER WARNING

My grandma’s idea of a summer salad was a lettuce leaf, a half a banana, a dollop of Miracle Whip, and a maraschino cherry. We loved it, but I don’t think i could force it down now.

Substitute a chilled 1/2 of a canned pear for the banana and you’ve brought back a childhood memory.

Some of the “salads” from that era makes me wonder what mental crisis we were all struggling with.

Me too. One of our favourite places in Spain has two ways with it. Very thinly sliced, like a carpaccio. Or, served as the tentacle - very long cooked, then finished in the pan to give it a bit of colour, then sprinkled with garlic and chilli. They describe that prep as “Bilbaino” which seems to be a fairly common prep for other seafood. Very simple. Very tasty.

That’s silly and childish (pun intended!) - she only got away with it because she was famous. If I did something like that with food I dislike, people would just tell me to get a grip.

There was also one with shredded carrots embedded in blocks of lime jello.

My mother used chopped peanuts instead of the cherry. It has been so long since I had it and I am not sure on this one, but since I have no recollection of Miracle Whip in the house, it was probably Hellman’s.

We had the canned pears with a chunk of cream cheese in the middle. I still like the combination of most any pear and most any creamy choice from the world of cheese. A triple creme and a really ripe comice or an Anjou, really ripe, is a great dessert.

I’m with DaBager in NO CARAWAY! Don’t know where it came from. Never got sick from it. OTOH, Green Pepper. I can point to one instance-- Dad when he first bought his eatery it was a seasonal summer only Lobster-in-the-rough spot. Very much a fast food spot w/ lobsters steamers… & FF stuff for the fish frowners. One item (prob a Sysco) was a Pepper Steak Sandwich. He always brought back any leftover stuff & I ate one and spent the night being violently sick. Can’t stand the taste since then. OTOOH, my spouse began sneaking Red & Yellow into Amer chop suey & her stir fries & I got OK w/ them.

Cilantro is fine. Don’t care for Licorice or Strawberry.

I have a friend who won’t eat green peppers. Red and yellow are OK though.

:woman_raising_hand: That’s me. I find green peppers give me horrible gas. They are also slightly bitter to me, whereas red are smoother tasting, almost slightly sweet.

I had a friend who’s grandma combined the ole canned fruit salad (in syrup) with Miracle Whip and marshmallows.

I hated cilantro when I was young. Now I love it.

Caraway still sucks!
