Good eats in Madison WI

Hello All,

We’re heading from Boston to Madison in a couple of weeks and would love suggestions especially but not exclusively, supper clubs, something about which I knew nothing until beginning our research. Bakeries a plus too but open to all ideas.

Thanks

If you want our premier supper club, go up north a tough to ishnala on Mirror Lake. It’s gorgeous and one of our first and most popular. https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tZP1zcsL0kqS0_KMGC0UjWosLAwMDcxMUs2TjVLSzQ2MLUyqDAzMbFItkhNTEuzTLQwSUz1Es4szshLzElUKC4tKEgtUkjOKU0CABeWFrA&q=ishnala+supper+club&rlz=1C1RXQR_enUS1071US1074&oq=Ishnala+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqEAgBEC4YrwEYxwEYsQMYgAQyBwgAEAAYjwIyEAgBEC4YrwEYxwEYsQMYgAQyBwgCEAAYgAQyBwgDEAAYgAQyCggEEAAYsQMYgAQyBggFEEUYOTIHCAYQABiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQABiABNIBCTQ4OTVqMGoxNagCCLACAfEF4-4b1gxzJU_xBePuG9YMcyVP&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

here’s one in Madison (Middleton is connected right to Madtown.)https://www.1847stammhouse.com/new-page
Fun environment.

Take note, though. Friday nights are fish fry nights, and Saturdays are prime rib. Those nights that, aside from the usual relish/salad/soup/etc. bar, they’ll only serve those things.

The Harvey House is channeling supper clubs. Just went two weeks ago and it’s pretty good. Sardine is excellent, but my favorite in Madison (and one of my favorites in the US) is L’Etoile. If you have business at UW, Steenbock’s on Orchard in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery building is very good. If you are around on a Saturday, head to the farmer’s market that wraps all the way around the capitol.

Thank you both! I was giving up hope on recs from this thread. We’re looking for good eats of all sorts, leaning more toward casual but not exclusively. I think we will do a fish fry on Friday and a supper club on Saturday. I’m surprised to see so many venues closed on Sunday.
Our nephew works at Epic and we will be doing a tour of the campus after the farmer’s market on Saturday. Considering a trip to New Glarus on Sunday.
Hitting Chicago before Madison so if you’ve got any wisdom to share there, we’re all ears and appetites!

Explore Grant Park, including Buckingham Fountain and the “Bean” or Cloud Gate Anish Kapoor sculpture at the northern end, near the Frank Gehry concert stage. Grab some freshly-cut mango from a sidewalk vendor, and let them decorate it with some spicy chamoy sauce. Then stroll over to the Art Institute for a bit more culture.

Purple Pig is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. I try to get there every trip.

Chicago: architecture boat tour, XOCO, Eleven City Diner.

I appreciate all the advice. My husband wants to try a Chicago beef sandwich. Johnnie’s seems to be the fave but too far out for this trip. Looking at Mr. Beef which happens to be near our hotel. I’m a bit concerned that as the “inspiration” for The Bear, it may now be more a tourist attraction than legit good food.
He’s also a burger fan so shortlisted are Loyalist and Au Cheval.

Thanks so much for the itinerary tips too. Checking out the architecture tour!

If we’re still talking about Madison “Supper Clubs” , so many have closed . Green Lantern on Lake Waubesa in Mcfarland & Toby’s on the east side still seem to be open. The Old Fashioned is the newish answer to a Supper Club in downtown Madison. You’ll need a reservation.

We went to Old Fashioned about 2 months ago. We were there on a Monday. No reservation but a bit of a wait. Worth it!

Probably the best brandy old fashioned we had that trip

I was all in on the supper club…“when in Rome” …but now I’m not so sure. Toby’s and the OF are on the list but I’m wondering if it’s more about a retro experience than food. Being from Boston I’ve seen so many must eat lists which are purely tourist driven and I’m afraid of being a sheep!

The tips are very much appreciated. Thanks!

I would say the Old Fashioned is not the traditional supper club vibe. The food has all the supper cub favorites but the atmosphere was lively and not the hush that I associate with a true supper club

A brandy old fashioned is a must try. I ask for less sweet which is club soda instead of sprite/ 7 up. It’s a very distant relative to what an old fashioned is normally thought of.

The farmers market is legendary. All local providers in season. My aunt was a flower vendor there for 10 years before her ALS progressed and it was such an honor for her
