Pearl Morissette upped to two stars, Sushi Masaki Saito loses a star (from two to one), aKin gets one star.
6 new Bibs, several outside of Toronto: 7 Enoteca (Oakville), Barrel Heart Brewing (Dundas), Mhel, Ricky + Olivia, Sundays (Uxbridge), and The Cottage Cheese.
LSL, Linny’s, and Sammarco are on the “recommended” list.
The Cottage Cheese is a weird pick. I hadn’t taken it seriously.
I live nearby and I haven’t been. I thought it looked like it was an average Indian restaurant in Kensington Market, with a mostly 20something date night client base.
Big mystery to me is why Langdon Hall still doesn’t have a star. aKin was just ok for me but I went beginning of this year and maybe they have improved.
It is expensive. They seem to be very loose with their definition of a Bib. They awarded Grey Gardens with a Bib in the past, which also is fairly expensive.
Interesting neither ALO nor EDULIS is on the list!!
I recently ate at #50 BEBA and found the food So-So…IMO, for something executed differently, PINE is better!
We’ve only eaten at a handful of this list, so it is hard to comment fully. I do find it a bit odd that Quetzal and Mhel are on this list - both are very good, but neither would strike be as best in North America.
For the Bay Area, while I agree that Benu and Quince are great, I’m surprised they are on the list and French Laundry isn’t.
And why no Mexico? It is part of North America (as is technically the Caribbean and Central America). Surely a few Mexican restaurants would be in the running for this list also.
French Laundry is not eligible to be on the list since they have won World No 1 already. Eleven Madison Park is the other restaurants that is not eligible for the same reason.
Mexico is excluded since it is already part of Latin America 50 Best list
I do agree about Mhel and Quetzal. No idea why they belong on the list. Plenty of better restaurants in Canada or US that are more deserving
I was just thinking this exact thing the other day, so to say I wholeheartedly agree with this article is understatement. I grew up in the transformative era when immigration changed everything… for the better.
I feel that in the absence of local restaurant critics, Michelin and corporate restaurants are getting away with a big ruse at our expense. I have great hope that Suresh Doss’ Locals Welcome on CBC TV will do a far better of reflecting who we are. We are distinct from every other nation. This is where my pride comes from. https://www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/program/locals-welcome
