A fun read that just scratches the surface.
Road trip!
Great article, thanks for posting it!
Has anyone here visited Portugalia? It’s been on my list for some time but I don’t really ever make it to that part of the state. Is it worth a 90 minute drive just for the store and lunch somewhere? And maybe a walk around town or something? I don’t know what else Fall River has on offer but in my mind it’s a kind of Lowell-esque place..?
I love Portuguese food even though I have only been able to try it for a handful of days in Lisbon, plus a few dinners at a Brazilian friends home.
So I was interested to read all the background info in the article. Jumped to the comments, and I had to laugh when I saw that a recipe of Ruth O’Donnell’s recommended in the comments calls for kale, linguica and a can of Campbell’s Bean With Bacon Soup. That is a recipe my Mom would have used! So I will probably enjoy it.
Saved that recipe.
I have not made my Portuguese/Brazilian Bacalhau recipe in years, too time consuming with all the rinses of the salted cod. Not sure of the name of my variant of the Bacalhau is called, but it has a lot of cod layered with potatoes, tomatoes, olives, onions, boiled eggs and green peppers. It was a recipe I got from a Brazilian friend who prepared it for family dinners.
Not sure how the green peppers snuck in there…
I’ve been there, and I’m certain that @SuzieCK, @JeremyK, and @tomatotomato have been there, so I’m in excellent company with more discerning taste than I. We have a house nearby in East Bay RI and Spring Onion loves visiting the battleship, so it’s not as arduous for us coming from RI as it would be as a day trip from Arlington.
Fall River/New Bedford is an interesting day trip from Greater Boston. Please post here if you want some travel tips.
ETA: I looked back nostalgically at posts about Portugalia and I got reminded about @Kennyz, who was one of my favorite posters. Hope they’re ok and just taking a break from us.
@a_m, fellow HO @SuzieCK made an awesome report of her visit to Portugalia here, and there were tons of responses and follow ups. A visit there is high on my list.
I was about to post that link but you’re quicker on the draw than I am.
When you roamed Huron Village in the days of yore, were you known as “Sudden” for the speed with which you could draw?
ETA: Of course in the conventions of Westerns, opposites rule. I’d be called “Bright” because I’m not, and you’d be called “Slow” for the same reason.
When I traversed Huron Village in the days of yore, I was on my rickety but trusty bike, headed from Fresh Pond to East Cambridge to visit my bestie. I maybe had a quarter to stop at Huron Drug to invest in treats at their awesome candy counter, one of my favorite places.
ETA: you could buy a lot of treats for a quarter back in them thar days.
My wife also assures me thusly from her childhood in Queens. But, not to derail this thread, let’s leave further discussion of Huron Village youth for another of those thar times.
we’ve often eaten in Fall River passing through the area - wonder if there are any updated recommendations there?
I haven’t been in about 18 months but it’s slims pickings over there. Portugalia aside, and maybe Canned Heat Brewing, I recall struggling to find anything decent around there although I heard there’s a few spots worth checking out: Sagres (Portuguese restaurant), Patti’s Pierogis (Polish), and Hartley’s Meat Pies
we have been to Sagres over the years though not recently.
