Singapore’s Odette is ranked #8 and Hong Kong’s The Chairman is #10 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Copenhagen’s Noma and Geranium snared the top two places.

If 32 and 33 are anything to go by, it shows that these listings continue to be very flawed. I’d be surprised if either would make many people’s Top 50 just in the UK.

It’s obviously no surprise that both are in London but both from the same small area (Shoreditch)? What a co-incidence. Not.

I’m not surprised, John. This World’s 50 Best list always have some very iffy inclusions.

Over at my part of the world, Burnt Ends at #34 was the only other Singapore entrant (besides Odette) on the list. I won’t deny that it’s a good restaurant, but I can also easily point out a dozen other restaurants in Singapore that are as good, if not (much) better, than Burnt Ends.

Curious- did they say why The Chairman climbed the spots? Is the restaurant doing something different these days?

We ate there years ago when they were starting out. It was a good meal for sure. Just wondering how they are doing these days.

They didn’t give any specifics, but an extract from the website states that The Chairman is:
“Built on tradition: Get ready to be transported through 2,000 years of Cantonese culinary history through the dining experience. The restaurant’s cooking style is built on tradition: the seafood is sourced by local fishermen, the sauces are created from scratch in the kitchen and The Chairman’s small farm in Sheung Shui is responsible for curing the preserved meats and even the salted eggs. The restaurant’s philosophy, ‘simple cooking will rule’, shines through every dish, creating a culinary experience like no other.”

I’d been following my HK friends’ Facebook postings in the past year, and they’d continued to praise their meals at The Chairman for the quality produce and consistently good cooking.
And I think at least a couple of them are jury members who voted for the list.
