Spelling Bee Thread — that is totally a (food) word!

Unsurprising. A lot of the words you list are not in common usage. Spelling Bee does have some odd ommissions, but this is not one of them. Neither is pide. Spelling Bee =/= Scrabble.

I don’t play Scrabble.

I do. The difference between the two word lists - as I’ve been informed by Spelling Bee every time I’ve complained about missing words, which I’ve done numerous times - is that Spelling Bee is supposed to use words “everyone” knows. While Scrabble has a much larger list, full of obscure words (like ones that use “q” without “u”).

Well, yes. I’m pretty sure that word is in common usage. You can split hairs about some of these words, but I’ve never said “piment” in my life, and my vocabulary is pretty good.

It’s a fairly common ingredient for advanced home cooks such as we, but I rarely sneak it into conversations.

In any event, the entire purpose of this thread is to bitch about the randomness of their inclusion/exclusion of relatively common terms

I agree that there’s a randomness to what Spelling Bee allows. But I don’t think that applies here, or in a lot of the more obscure words people have posted. Like “menemen.”

English is only my second language (third, if ya count sarcasm), so I’m probably the wrong person to ask. I’m familiar with many cooking terms that are not common in the US, or certainly not known to a broader audience that doesn’t live to eat/cook.

I would say that callaloo is just as obscure as menemen.

There’s an argument to be made there (but not in NYC, 'cause we have Golden Krust). I don’t think “tomtit” or “cloaca” are all that commonly used, and yet there they are. And I’m also familiar with a lot of non-US food terms - my second language is “menu” - but I know that the average Spelling Bee reader is probably not.

I appreciate the fact that I learn new words all the time, bc pinniped and such don’t come up often in my conversations with friends, either.

Less keen on the fact that the SB often includes several different spellings of a word.

Yeah, I’ve been playing words with friends for a long time and I’ve learned all those q words like qat and qaid, qi and a new one that is all consonants.
