A common drink during sweltering Japanese summers, I was about to tear into a new packet of ume konbu powder. Ume = Japanese plum, and konbu = a type of kelp.
I’m not sure how Japanese people can eat as much salt as they apparently do. Another ume product, which I purchased a while back, are these “candies” which taste to me like pure salt. 3200mg of sodium per serving! I love umeboshi, which is also packed with a shocking amount of sodium, and I am partial to pretty salty stuff in general, but for these I couldn’t even finish a single pellet. (You can scroll down to read my review if you like. It looks like it’s amassed more negative than positive votes…perhaps my palate is not sophisticated enough.)

i like a little umeboshi paste in my maki rolls when i make them, but not sure a hard candy that fills your mouth with the flavor would be something that appeals to me.
I ran out of Penzey’s chicken base. I was reluctant to get Better Than Bouillon, because I thought it contained a lot of salt. The “Reduced Sodium” variety had about 25% less sodium than the regular one at 510mg/tsp, so I got it. I got home and looked at the empty Penzey’s jar–600mg in 3/4 tsp. Sigh.
