Do any of our HOs with kids celebrate St. Nick's (St. Nikolaus) today?

It’s kind of a big thing back in the homeland. Kids put out their biggest boots (or more than one pair of shoes) on the evening of December 5th, then wake up to see them filled with chocolate, nuts, and oranges — well, at least that was the case when I was a child, back in the last century :old_woman:

Theoretically, children that had misbehaved would get coal or nothing, but I was clearly a very well behaved child :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m aware this is more of a Western European tradition, but given how international our members are I thought I’d ask.

And, on related subject, do any of our members with Dutch heritage celebrate Zwarte Piet (Black Peter), alongside St Nick? Yes, I know it’s a controversial thing in parts of Netherlands society these days.

OMG. I find that very hard to believe. There is a hilarious David Sedaris story about it, however:

All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Austin will receive a visit from him tomorrow. It’s always fun.

But tomorrow’s Dec 7

I know, but we gather on Sunday. It’s as close to correct as we get.

So, what happens? Do the kids in attendance get anything? Are there carols?

Because blackface is not ok in any context

Some background for those unaware of this tradition.

He comes into the church in the middle of the service, comes to the front, gathers the young (and young at heart) around him, and tells about himself. He is fairly tall and has a deep voice. His bishop’s clothing, replete with crozier and mitre. He hands out chocolate coins wrapped in gold coins. When he is done, he says where he is headed next and leaves the way he came.

Sweet!

It’s not only for the kids

Interesting. I’ve only ever seen this done for kids, but I suppose one can extend one’s childhood indefinitely — as long as someone else plays along.

Wer so süß ist wie ich braucht keinen extra Zucker — deutsch oder amerikanisch is egal

Anyone celebrating Krampus?

They would take away my grand-parenting license.
