Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

Exactly… I have no evidence or reason to expect this, but its just a gut feeling.

Yes… All of my meal planning is based on what I can get on sale or clearance. I’ve given up on trying to purchase any hamburger – just way too expensive.

Even our weekly staples have gone up significantly. Have you noticed how much a loaf of bread has gone up. I’m baking all of our bread, now. Sunshine likes whole wheat bread and whole wheat flour has gone up (a good bit), as well.

I mentioned (up thread) that I was feeling uneasy and going to stock up on additional canned goods (when they are on sale).

Thanks for posting some “real world” data, but yea – we’ve already been feeling it.

I think everyone is feeling it. Sticker shock is real. Yes, bread has gone up. The artisan stuff, baguettes, etc, have gone up like crazy…so I don’t buy. Now a luxury item and I don’t need the carbs. I give Trader Joe’s some credit. They’ve kept the prices reasonable, less than .50 cent bump, if I recall, at least for their sliced sourdough rounds.

I bought 70/30 ground beef the other day. I’ve not seen that formula in many years. The slightly lower price per pound may be a reflection of a lower price /higher fat ratio. I dunno, it is a vast and confusing world these days.

It’s usually 73/27 here. You’ll find out when you cook it somehow. You get what you pay for..

From what I remember it is quite greasy and definitely a flamer on the grill.

And not a lot of meat left.

I don’t know where and how you buy your flours but we also bake most of our breads at home and buy 50lb bags of bread flour (but you can also buy others) at restaurant supply stores (much cheaper in that quantities) - the last few times at Webstaurant Stores
We like this King Arthur Patent Flour for our breads a lot

I usually purchase our All Purpose Flour in 25 pound bags for about $11 at Walmart.

But I will look at the web-site – it might be worth putting in an order (50 pound bags) and getting it all in stock.

Thanks!!

I have been donating a lot more to the community fridge in Toronto lately.

I can’t believe how much some groceries are costing.

Rack of lamb is hovering around $39 CAD/lb ($28USD/lb), leg of lamb at $19.99 CAD/lb in Ontario right now. Lean ground beef is around $11 CAD/lb ($8 USD/lb)

$1 CAD is 71 cents USD today

$1 USD is $1.40 CAD today

Success… my early morning trip to the grocery store yielded the 10 cans of tuna I wanted. There were only about 30 cans there, so I’m glad I grabbed my 10 before they ran out.

That will make at least 10 (dinner) meals for the two of us and maybe a lunch or two for Sunshine.

Hopefully there will be some better sales, next week.

I started tracking off of our bank statements. This is for a household of three in Eugene, Oregon.

Not grocery, but a friend on another forum mentioned their favorite burritos in downtown Berkeley, so I looked it up. $17.95 for a regular burrito (meat, beans, rice, salsa)! And just a block away from the Berkeley campus. My regular joint charges $10.50, another downtown place $13.50 (and it includes guac, crema, and cheese). Trucks are also at $10.50 or so.

NPR: Grocery prices have jumped up, and there’s no relief in sight

https://www.npr.org/2025/09/19/nx-s1-5539547/grocery-prices-tariffs-food-inflation

29% increase since Feb.2025. Nothing political here. NPR checks facts.

When food prices rise like that and people need to start cutting back on basics, that’s not political….that’s a crime. Shame on the weak who bury their heads in the sand….but y’all know this already.

Wow - very cool (my background is math/statistics) to see this as a color-coded (by store/source) graph. And awesome tracking line for the 3 month rolling average, showing that for your household of 3 the expenses have declined this year. Was the change to shop more at Safeway instead of Winco and Kiva intentional for cost-savings, or just seasonal?

Read again, @ML8000 - The NPR article says “Up 29% since February 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.” - i.e. over the span of FIVE years, not the past 9 months.

the article actually sez grocery prices have increased 29% since February 2020 - NOT- 2025.

for 2025 the prices for my regular grocery shop has stayed fairly steady, which is a good thing. otoh, eating out has become cost prohibitive… i’m down to 2 to 3 times a month.

OK, my bad. I guess if someone didn’t tag the article that says 23% increase since Jan 2025, I wouldn’t have posted it. In case, PRICES ARE UP. You can tag articles you think are political but they’re not….and we all know who is to blame.
