Trader Joe’s Product Reviews – YEA/NAY/MEH – 2025 Edition

relink

I mostly agree, though some of the things they don’t like much have been quite good over time. And their prices on cheese really cannot be beaten for the specialty ones.

@vinouspleasure I thought you might find it particularly interesting that today I found FOUR varieties of parm – one being the cheap Giotto one (8.99) and another a 10-month one, but they they had the red stravecchio (3 years) and a new black I haven’t ever seen before (55 months). There’s some confusion in the labeling of the older cheese too, between the price label & the colored one with nutrition facts.

I am now verrrrrryyyyy suspicious – my fam ordered a red & a black lable (vacche rosse) parm from Italy during the pandemic (that I believe @emglow101 has ordered at some point too) and now I’m wondering if these are the same or thereabouts. I’ve picked up small chunks of both to sample, and will probably go back for more to stock up for the fam based on the taste test – to see if they can tell the difference  – because the price points are vastly different!

What’s the price per lb on the red and on the black?

I’ve been buying the one from Costco.

19.99

I concur, very good as a gin mixer, but not too much. That is why I bought it and it did fit the bill.

i’m sure you know, the 36th and 55 month are meant to be eaten on its own (not grated) while the younger cheeses are meant to be grated. the cheese labeled parm as opposed to parm reg is probably not from italy.

I mostly trust TJs on cheese, looking forward to the results of your taste test!

I haven’t tried this - and I’m not sure I will - But figured someone might be interested in this new product.

And how many people will pick this up thinking it’s the actual can of corn? LOL

Nope.

The lamb shoulder shreds worked nicely in a quick stir-fry today, too.

YEA for the new lower-plastic packaging across various departments such as charcuterie and some meat (though it will make it trickier to freeze things in the package).

Mixed feelings on the updated organic beef selection, which is very sporadic – I haven’t seen any ground of late, just 2-3 types of steaks of inconsistent availability. Would be nice if they added more in this section from the same supplier.

YEA for the expanding selection of crate-free pork (which I assume is courtesy CA legislation); it would be even better if they added an organic option.

YEA for the expanded Australian lamb selection – I mentioned to the manager yesterday that they skipped cubed and went from whole shoulder and rack to partial rack, shaved shoulder, and ground lamb, so could they please also add cubed?

Would be nice too see a lot less plastic in the produce department.

Nay to the super premium strawberry ice cream. They flavor the base really strongly with a straw that tastes artificial to me. More Strawberry Quick than strawberries and cream. Bleh.

I used to love Strawberry Quick as a kid :joy:

But with the “super premium” label I would have expected real strawberry ice cream (which I don’t like) vs fake (which I do).

Every year I look forward to the Harry & David boxed Comice Pears … $10 … same price as last year! They are beyond perfect. I keep them in the fridge and peel before eating, don’t like pear skins. They come in a nice, sturdy box, too good to toss out. So, I saved it and did not find a use for it, yet. I’m thinking of saving this new one, too.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME?

Hm. I was eying them when I was last at TJ’s, but wasn’t sure about the price. How do they compare to Bosc or Red Bartlett? What makes them so special to you?

I’m like that for the boxed seasonal pears at Sam’s. I think they’re Bartlett? So good!

I think it was on Chowhound that I once started a thread admitting to buying foods based on the utility/shape/beauty of their glass containers. I was not alone! It became a VERY long confessional!

If you reveal the box allure in is own thread, your people will find you!

I loved strawberry Quik as a kid, but it gave me hives everytime I had a glass. :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:
