I can assure you that Dr. Wormbrain or any silly conspiracies regarding seed oil had absolutely nothing to do with my order.

It was a menu item included in the delivery options from a local farm, and all I could think was “F yeah!”

I have nothing against hippies, either. Some of my best friends are hippies :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I say popular because it’s been mentioned here a lot of late; I never really paid attention to it before. All the others have always been present in my kitchen.

I guess it’s not something you’d find at any ole supermarket. It usually comes in large amounts, which is why it’s used more in the industry.

My favorite French bistro fries their frites in tallow, which inspired me to get my own, bc they are amazing. Not sure I’ll make fries with it, but it’ll be used :slight_smile:

When I saw that beef tallow was becoming popular, one of the first things across my mind was “Well, great. Now the wannabe trendy people are going to make that more expensive, too”.

Hopefully they keep their mitts off suet and leaf lard.

Make the fries!!! It’s worth it! Melt the tallow in a pan and then add the fries while it’s still “cold” and cook per the cold oil method. Really, really good!

Ok. Something nice for a change.

Our local art museum, The Crocker, holds a mini comic-con each year, featuring mostly local artists and small print stuff, but also a few more independent national figures.

This year, they got Shannon Wheeler, the author Too Much Coffee Man to set up a booth, and at the very last minute, arranged to give him a room to do a casual q&a for an hour.

Evidently, it was so last minute that it ended up him, myself, and my partner alone for the better part of an hour, discussing comics, art, animation, movies. I got stories about Dave Sim (Cerebus the Aardvark) and Robert Crumb. I introduced him to films he’d never heard of.

Had a ton of fun, got my book signed.

I strongly recommend his work. If you like those old “weekly reader” strips like Groening’s Life in Hell or Lynda Barry’s Ernie Pook’s Comeek, you’ll probably like Wheeler’s stuff. Angsty, slightly surreal. Very 90’s.

In addition, tallow has a pungent and distinctive smell that may turn off some users.

However, the trend has rekindled an interest in natural skincare products, and for most, the benefits of beef tallow outweigh the possible downsides.

I plan on using my container of tallow exclusively for frying / roasting stuff. I don’t think I would like smelling like beef fat, regardless of its alleged benefits to one’s skin.

It can have a strong hamburger-ish smell.

The one on the left will make your skin smell like hamburgers. The one on the right, my daughters have used on their skin, and say they can make out some smell, but mainly just that it’s got some mild oil-like smell, not any specific pungency to it.

These two and one other not pictured were from the same cryovac packed beef subprimal. I rendered all the trimmed fat together but washed it in batches. The guy on the left only got a few washes because I just planned on using for cooking, while the one on the right was (IIRC) 7 or 8 washes.

I was applying some Badger Balm yesterday, and I noticed it smelled like good olive oil. I hadn’t even noticed that it was made of olive oil when I purchased it.

I am glad it isn’t made out of badgers.

Use your favourite oil or fat, I suppose.

I was in World Market on Saturday (they sell everything from furniture and rugs to candles, dishes, home decor, international foods, coffee, tea, wine, and craft beer) and ALL of the food Advent calendars and Christmas-related food items are there (including the peppermint bark in your picture!), as are their Christmas ornaments. Each area had their area set aside already for Christmas - which I’m sure will expand over the next couple of weeks.
